Description
Uttapam is a popular South Indian breakfast dish. It is similar to a pancake but thicker and softer. Uttapam is made from a fermented batter of rice and urad dal (split black gram), which gives it a slightly tangy taste. Unlike dosa, which is thin and crispy, uttapam is soft and fluffy.
What makes uttapam special is the toppings. Chopped vegetables like onions, tomatoes, carrots, and green chilies are added on top while cooking, making it colorful and healthy. Sometimes, coriander or grated coconut is also used for extra flavor. It is cooked on a flat pan with a little oil until golden brown on both sides.
Uttapam is usually served hot with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, or sambar (a lentil-based soup). It is nutritious, easy to digest, and loved by children and adults alike. Because of its soft texture and tasty toppings, it’s often a favorite breakfast or snack in South India.
