Description
Idlies are a popular South Indian food that are soft, round, and steamed. They are made from a smooth batter of rice and urad dal (split black gram). The batter is soaked, ground, and then left to ferment overnight. This fermentation makes idlies light, fluffy, and easy to digest. After fermentation, the batter is poured into small molds and steamed until cooked.
Idlies are usually white in color and have a mild taste, which makes them easy to eat with many side dishes. They are commonly served with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, and sambar, a spicy lentil soup. Idlies are often eaten for breakfast, but they can also be enjoyed at any time of the day.
This dish is considered very healthy because it is steamed, not fried, and contains little oil. Idlies are rich in carbohydrates and protein, giving energy and keeping the stomach light.
